"There was a tan rock with the shape of a red star in the center of it. It looked like a place where an atom split and it stained the stone with a reddish blur. There was a tiny vertical crack, blooming with greenish mold. It was the only verdant thing in the canyon. Hardly anything grew, not cactus, not even scrubby brush. No one understood where the water came from and it made little sense to see it ooze from the rock. It would drop about six inches and then flow more freely. Everyone had heard stories. Stories about a man who touched it to his neck and he was healed."
