Lucy is light-hearted and a bit of a flirt. Sally is serious and romantic. And then there's Jeanie, the youngest, who is so timid that she has few friends outside the family. Mary Jerod, trusting God and her own hard work, brings her daughters up in dust bowl Oklahoma during the dirty thirties on a drought-stricken eighty acres in such a fashion that in the long away future they will be able to say, "Those were the best years of our lives."
But Mary, the grownup who bears all the responsibility, is sometimes terrified as crops fail, she gets sick, and her girls don't always make the best choices. Sometimes she doesn't understand how God can let the terrible dry years roll on and on, but she does know that he has promised to be with her through the hard times.

For some reason I have to admit I was a little confused at first as to who everyone was in Mary Jerod's Daughters. I am so glad that I managed to get them straight and hang on. It quickly became a page turner for me. I became caught up in this family as I began to understand their needs, wants, and individual cares. With wonderful descriptions I could imagine the dust, the long working hours, the desperation, and the hope of better days to come.Mary shined through in this book. She was a mother who put herself last (like so many of us) and made sure the children were okay first. She was strong, hardworking, and had a strong believe in God. In turn, her children adored and cared about the Mother who loved and cared for them so much.
I laughed, cried, and rejoiced as this family went through life.
A wonderful book!

Mary Jerod Daughters edition by Beth Coy Browning Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This was a very interesting and heartwarming story of how this widow worked their farm with just her and her three daughters working together to survive during the great depression. They all worked hard and did without but they loved each other and those girls grew into wonderful women, like their Mom.
Downloaded this book as a "Freebie" on & I sure am glad I did!! I really enjoyed the storyline, the history and the excellent writing. I cant wait to look for more books from this author!!!!
I lived during some of the years described in this book. It was a hard time but everyone was in the same condition so we didn't really think we were any different and as a child, I didn't know any better times. The portrait of Mary Jerod was similar to a lot of people from those years. The flour sack dresses were wonderful to kids of that time. It wasn't all bad before we had all our social protection programs in place but it was a lot scarier in many ways. I thought the author did an excellent job on all the characters, especially pointing out the big differences between the girls personalities.
It was a very good read and I enjoyed it.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this novel - the author manages to convey the struggles of the family without being downright depressing. Although they endured numerous hardships, I loved seeing how the community came together to support one another (and made me a bit sad that doesn't happen more often today!). There are some elements of faith scattered throughout, but but in a matter-of-fact, non-preachy fashion.
A great story about a difficult time. The people in the U.S. are tough as nails and those who scratched out a living in the dust bowl had to have a lot of faith and trust that God truly is in control and has a plan. Thanks for the entertaining read
To read about what All our ancestors went thru in the early 20th century makes our current problems seem Trivial ... I know I could never have made it thru such trials as Mary and her family went thru.. I feel like I was privileged to be brought up with a full belly everyday of my young life,,,and I know that we were considered "poor".... Truly a Great read !!
I found this an interesting read. Mary's family, and eventually only she and her daughters, struggle to grasp a living from their farm. They live in the middle of the "dust bowl" area during the Great Depression". I would have given it four stars had it not been so full of errors. There was a lot of misspelled words, wrong verb usage, and mixing peoples names. The statement that Mama could pick six or seven hundred pounds of cotton was unbelievable. I grew up on a cotton farm and a champion cotton picker seldom picked four hundres pounds a day. Really needed a good proof reader.
