Many of his experiences might leave a non-visitor thinking they are a bit unlikely, over the top or overly embellished but having lived in Thailand for four years, so many of them ring true. To also see them from the perspective of a teacher is a view that is new and refreshing. While certainly a great resource for any would be teacher in Thailand, it also would serve equally well for any visitor to Thailand as a insight to day to day life locally. This summary of life as a foreigner in Bangkok from a Canadian who spent a couple of years teaching there is particularly interesting for anyone that has spent some time in the city.
This is a great book that will take the reader right into the heart of life in Bangkok. It is a great blend of the common experiences we all have and the exotic settings of Thailand. It brings the people and landscape to life. Highly recommended!!!
I found it an interesting read since it effectively put me in the shoes of the author in his year in Thailand. The sights, sounds and pulse of Thailand are captured effortlessly. The situations are hilarious such as the miscommunication between Ryan and his girlfriend, the scorpion in his fruit bowl, his eccentric Thai boss and the ladyboy on the boat. Overall, it is a funny easy read and a great book for those who want to know more about the experience of a foreigner living and working in Thailand.
Having lived and worked in Thailand, I really found this book to be very insightful about the specific nuances that only Thailand can bring. With a good mix of humour and adventure, the author takes you along for his Thai experiences--ranging from surviving attacks from venomous animals, to negotiating your way through the crazy roadways, to partying like a rock star.
Great book for anyone who is thinking of working or visiting this exotic place. Also a good read for anyone who isn't planning on going, but wants to share in the author's experiences.
Ok book - but more an airplane book (read on plane and leave it ) than something you Will return to.
